Individual Employee: Share your learning across the extended organization

Individual Employee be heard and seen

How do you make your voice heard? Express yourself? One of the frustrations in very large organizations is that directives from the top are sure to reach their intended targets. The reverse is rarely true of feedback finding its way back up. Employee feedback is often collated, analyzed, statistically massaged, and given a good spin before reaching any place meaningful. The nuances of an individual’s story and message are missed altogether.

We want to talk about You, the Individual Employee in this blog. To speak from an individual experience and point of view to enrich your organization.

With this new release of kPoint, we want to give you specific suggestions pertaining to the roles you and your colleagues play in your organizations. These suggestions are about how to use Enterprise Video to dramatically improve communicating and sharing your knowledge.

One kPoint customer, a large Oil & Gas Company, had a long-standing continuous improvement initiative. One measure of success required direct feedback from employees demonstrating what they had done. Management faced a challenge. How could they make the impact visible to everyone and make the contributors feel appreciated? Nothing they had tried could get the initiative recognized and soon participation fell off.

Informal communication between individuals is the most powerful way of digesting news and directives.

kPoint’s Enterprise Video Platform provided a unique solution. Employees used their mobile phones to create individual videos demonstrating their efforts and shared them across the organization. Read about it here.

Informal communication between individuals is the most powerful way of digesting news and directives. It is also an invaluable means of sharing ingrained organizational knowledge that hasn’t been documented. There are some formal relationships that enable that: Mentoring is a great way of passing down hard-earned experience to others. Read more about it in Paying it Forward. Wisdom flows both ways. New employees with a new perspective or skill-set, perhaps fresh out of school can help others in the company. Called “Reverse Mentoring” read more about it in a blog, “Lessons from the Future” we published recently.

We hope your organization empowers you to speak up. An observant employee spotting the potential for catastrophe and preventing it by drawing attention to it, introducing innovative methods from hands-on experiences on an assembly line is the stuff of legends. Video has become the means of doing that recently.   Think of so many recent news stories captured on mobile phones of bystanders. Do you think the emotional impact would be the same with plain print reporting?

While it may not be that dramatic or newsworthy, use your voice to create positive change in your organization. That beautiful sunset as you sat in traffic leaving work. Bring attention to a mess left unattended in the pantry. Your weekend trek. A nifty workaround you learned using the Enterprise ticketing system. A surprise congratulatory video message for your team member.

So don’t wait for an opportunity to try your hand. Here is something you could do without any preparation: You’ve been working from home. Make a short video on your phone with commentary about an improvement you have made to make your workspace at home. A short “Before and After”. A rearrangement? A foolproof audio-video set up? Send it to your manager and your colleagues. Do share it with us. We really look forward to your creativity!

Stay safe.
